Arts integration

"Arts integration is an idea that is necessary for the success of our students in the future. And if we are to have students that are adaptable, creative and powerful leaders and shakers and movers in our future society, they need the arts combined with their core working together to help them become their total person."
Today students face some of the most exciting and different job opportunities. These experiences require a vast set of skills and ability to think creatively. While many see an increase in the study of core subjects as the answer, Melanie uses her own experiences with art integration as a way to solve the problems facing education. She also touches on how everyone can step forward to help rather then sit on the sidelines complaining and devising solutions to the arts in education concerns (source)
According to a definition by the Kennedy Center "Arts Integration is an approach to teaching in which students construct and demonstrate understanding through an art form. Students engage in a creative process which connects an art form and another subject area and meet evolving objects in both."
Melanie Skankey is an art teacher at a science, technology, engineering, and math focused elementary school.
